Turkish mobile numbers are 11 digits starting with 05 (e.g., 0530-0539 for Turkcell, 0540-0549 for Türk Telekom, 0550-0559 for Vodafone). The first four digits indicate the carrier. Landline numbers start with area codes (e.g., 0212/0216 for Istanbul European/Asian side, 0312 for Ankara, 0232 for Izmir). The trunk prefix 0 is dropped when using +90.
Turkish Number Basics You'll Need
Turkish digits are: sıfır (0), bir (1), iki (2), üç (3), dört (4), beş (5), altı (6), yedi (7), sekiz (8), dokuz (9). Turkish numbers are beautifully regular and consistent, reflecting the language's agglutinative nature. Tens are straightforward: on (10), yirmi (20), otuz (30), kırk (40), elli (50), altmış (60), yetmiş (70), seksen (80), doksan (90). Compound numbers simply combine: yirmi beş (25), otuz üç (33). There are no irregular forms, no reversed digits, and no base-20 complications.
How Turkish Speakers Say Phone Numbers
Turkish speakers typically read phone numbers digit by digit following the written grouping pattern. Zero is "sıfır." The 05XX prefix is read as four digits, then the remaining digits follow in groups matching the format: three, then two, then two. Turkish numbers are beautifully regular — once you know the basic digits and tens, everything follows a consistent pattern. The pace is usually clear and even. Some speakers may read the last four digits as two pairs of two-digit numbers.

Common Mistakes When Hearing Turkish Phone Numbers
Confusing bir (1) and beş (5) can happen because both start with 'b'. Altı (6) and yedi (7) can also sound similar at speed. The 'ü' in üç (3) and the 'ö' in dört (4) use Turkish vowel sounds that do not exist in English — mispronouncing them can lead to confusion. Kırk (40) and elli (50) are irregular compared to the pattern of other tens and must be memorized. Istanbul's split area codes (0212 European side, 0216 Asian side) can confuse visitors who do not know which side they are on.

Phone Culture in Turkey
WhatsApp is the primary messaging app in Turkey, used by virtually everyone. Turkey has a strong phone culture — people are comfortable making and receiving calls at almost any time. When answering, Turks say "Alo?" or "Efendim?" (literally "my lord/master" but used as a polite greeting). Turkey requires IMEI registration for phones used with Turkish SIMs for more than 120 days, which affects long-term visitors. Tea houses and cafes are common places for socializing and exchanging numbers.
Traveling to Turkey?
Turkey requires official IMEI registration for phones staying longer than 120 days. Prepaid SIM cards from Turkcell, Vodafone, or Türk Telekom are available at airport shops and branded stores. Tourist SIMs with generous data are available for short-term visitors without IMEI registration concerns. WhatsApp is the primary messaging app. If you buy a local SIM and plan to stay long-term, your phone's IMEI must be registered within 120 days or the SIM will be blocked. Turkey has excellent mobile coverage in cities and tourist areas.
